Open With Me: Jan/Feb Glam Bag

Hey Beauties!

I’m finally getting this catch up post done.  And then I will just have to get my March boxes up before my April ones come and I will be caught up!  haha.

Anyways, here is the Ipsy Glam Bag from January and February 2013:

The January bag was a nice navy colour.  There was a long story associated with this bag, including 2 failed deliveries to my old address after we had moved…  For the whole story watch the video at the end!  Long story short is this might be a totally different bag because they had run out of some original products.

DSC07770

Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play

First up is a hairspray from Big Sexy Hair.  It is called “Spray & Play”, so I am hoping it has a decent hold but it still soft to the touch!  My hair doesn’t hold curl well at all, but the last thing I want is a helmet head…

DSC07771

Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange Body Butter

This is a vegan and natural body lotion product.  It smells delicious!  I have so many lotions that I need to empty right now that I won’t be using this right away, but it will be perfect for summer vacations! =)

DSC07772

Jose Maran 100% Argan Oil

I have never used any argan oil products before, let alone 100% pure oil, so it will be interesting to see what uses I find for this!  This is supposed to be kind of a miracle product…  Have any of you ever used it before?  What are your favourite uses?

DSC07776

Nailtini polish in “Bloody Mary”

Yay!!  Another Nailtini polish ^_^   I love the one that I got before Christmas, so I can’t wait to try this one out.  Especially in this colour!  It is a really fiery red with a hint of an orange undertone to it.  I just want to stare at it all day…  Love!

DSC07774

SOHO Smudge Brush

This was the little bonus item that they gave me for messing up my bag a couple of times, I didn’t get it until after my February one!  It’s a brush from a company called “SOHO”.  I haven’t used any of their products before, so I am interested to try this out.  They call it a smudge brush, but to me it looks like a smaller crease brush.  I imagine my smudge brushes as very small and dense and flatter.   Is that just me?  The bristles are nylon, so no animal products =), and it is extremely soft!

February’s bag had the popular “Red Carpet Ready” theme that seems to encompass all things beauty at that time of year because of all of the awards shows!  Do you watch any of them?   I’m a sucker for the Grammys because it’s basically just a big concert, and I LOVE looking at all of the gorgeous dresses that I wish I could wear at the Oscars.

DSC07665 The bag is a nice black “patent leather”, with a classic red interior.  Love it!

DSC07673

Pixi “Flawless and Poreless” primer

This primer has a bit of colour as you’ll see in the photo below, but it really blends out translucent.  I haven’t tried this on my face yet, but I think that might just serve to help even out your skin tone before you even put on foundation.  I will love it if it helps hide my redness!

DSC07674

Pixi “Flawless & Poreless” Primer

The next item is a set of lash cards from lashcard.com.  These are basically mascara or shadow shields that are designed to help you put on your mascara without getting it all over your eyelids.  I don’t really have a huge problem with that, so I’m not sure what I’ll use these for.  My problem is that I ALWAYS have to sneeze right after I put on my mascara.  And we all know it’s impossible to sneeze with your eyes open, so what happens?  I sneeze and my wet mascara goes all over my cheeks where my lashes hit my face =(.  It sucks!  Maybe I should put these under my eyes for when I sneeze…

DSC07763

Pop Beauty “Smoky Lash Kapow!!!” Mascara in Smoky Black

This is another mascara sample, because I definitely don’t have enough of these! </sarcasm>.  Don’t get me wrong, I love trying new mascaras, but I can only use so many at once!  I have a nice little collection of these babies now.  I do love the name though, you can’t help but be excited when you read it!

DSC07764

MICA Beauty black gel eyeliner

This is an eyeliner from MICA Beauty.  I don’t think there is much else to say about this…  There was no name or colour listed on the packaging, and it looks like your standard black gel eyeliner.  I have one on the go from Urban Decay, so I hope this will last long enough without drying out!  It does seem to be a full size sample though =)

DSC07767

Coastal Scents Eyeshadows in “In The Spotlight”

And the last product is another Coastal Scents eyeshadow quad.  This set is called “In The Spotlight”, and I’m not really that excited about it.  Sadly the light kept changing and my camera couldn’t capture the colours too accurately.  The are all yellowy, which does not do too well with my skin with yellow undertones in it.  I can guarantee I will never use that yellow in the top right!  The gold and the dark olive have some potential though.

I hope you enjoyed this little recap, and be sure to watch the video for a more thorough look!

xoxo

First Impressions: Caruso Steam Molecular Hair Setter

Hi Beauties,

I think this is my first “first-impressions” post!  I have very fine hair, but quite a bit of it, and it just will NOT hold a curl!  I have tried curling irons, curling wants, straighteners, heat activated curling sprays, you name it.  Nothing works.  I might get nice curls that look beautiful but they are gone in about 20 minutes. It is so frustrating =(.  I have had fine, stick straight hair all of my life, and it wouldn’t be so bad if I could even just get a little bit of volume in there, but that just won’t happen!

I finally decided to try hot rollers.  They seem like they would be so much easier to use compared to a curling iron, and hopefully take less than 45 minutes!  After extensive research (googling) and reading blogs and user reviews it seemed like this Caruso system was the best way to go for me.  The idea is that you have rollers encased with sponge that absorbs steam and uses the heat and moisture to set your hair in 15 minutes.

IMG_0621

The whole shebang

The promise: “The Caruso Professional Molecular Hairsetter was invented to finally give women the results that they longed for – long lasting curls and volume while keeping hair healthy, shiny and in great condition. The Caruso Professional Molecular system is a revelatory process, tiny molecules of steam penetrate the hair shaft reforming the chain bonds to create healthy, strong beautiful curls. This hairsetter has been customized give you the styling power to accommodate any and all of today’s most popular hair styles. The compact size also makes it ideal for home use.”  They also claim that the curls “Will last for days”!

IMG_0622

The rollers come in 5 sizes: Petite, Small, Medium, Large, Jumbo (not shown)

IMG_0623

Top: Large
Bottom: Jumbo

Of course all of this got me very excited, and many of the bloggers and users called this the best hot rollers for my hair type, because it is supposed to really set your hair in a way that dry heat can’t.  I ordered it from Amazon, and finally got the time tonight to try it out the other night.  Here are the photos:

During

IMG_0626

After

As you can see, NOTHING HAPPENED!!  GAH.  I can’t even express how disappointed I am at these results.  I was really hoping for anything, a bit of curl, waves, body, anything!  Nothing…  I followed the instructions to a tee, and something obviously didn’t work.  I don’t know if I didn’t get them hot enough?  I saw a lot of reviews saying that they don’t work if you leave them on the steam too long and they get saturated, but I left them on a little bit longer than the 5 seconds they recommended for my hair type.  I know this is my first try and I will be playing around with this more to see if I can’t get some results.  I am going to try steaming the clip as well next time, and maybe leaving them on the steamer a bit longer and rolling my hair more tightly around the sponge.

If I find a way that makes this work for me I will be sure to let you know, so stay tuned!

Fellow fine-haired ladies out there, what works for you to get curls that last all night??

Open With Me: Jan, Feb Birchbox

Hey Beauties,

I know I’m behind the times with this, and I won’t make it a detailed post.  I’ll just quickly show you what I got in my January and February Bichboxes.  Scroll to the end for the video!

Embryolisse Lait Cream Concentrate

First up is a pair of body lotions from 100% Pure, in Green Apple and Cabernet Grape.  100% vegan, which is nice!

Next up is a fragrance from Aerie called “Shimmer”.  It is a light floral and powdery scent.

Then we have Ojon Rare Blend Oil Total Hair Therapy.  Not the type of product that I typically need with my fine hair, but we’ll see!  The colours are beautiful =)

Lastly, the product that I am the most excited about!  Embryolisse Lait Cream Concentrate.  I don’t know if any of you watch Pixiwoo on YouTube (If you don’t, why not?!), but they talk about this all the time!  I have wanted to try it for ages, but never knew where to buy it in person, and didn’t really want to spend the money online without knowing what I was getting.  So I was thrilled to get a sample in my Birchbox!  This little sample has lasted me more than 2 weeks with daily use, morning and night.  Very impressive!  It feels so nice when it goes on, and really leaves my skin feeling moisturized and smooth.

DSC07657

“Red Carpet Ready!”

February’s Theme was “Red Carpet Ready”.  I feel like this must have been a standard theme across all beauty boxes this month, right in the thick of awards season!

The first product is an enzymatic face mask.  I have never used a product like this, but I am really excited to try!  Hopefully it will be ok with my sensitive skin.

A Lancome mascara!  These have a practically cult following, and I have never used one before.  I am really excited to try this one out =)

I will have to wait until I get a bit of sunshine before I can use this product, the colour is “Hazel”, and it is too dark for me.

DSC07661

Twistband Headband

Twistband had hair elastics in Birchbox previously.  I didn’t understand what all the hype was about…  It didn’t leave any creases in my hair, sure, but that’s because it didn’t secure my hair tightly enough to hold it up!  It would just slide out.  I’m sure this headband will do the same.  I need ones with grippies, or else they are no good…

DSC07662

*Drooooollll*

Finally, a delicious square that needs no introduction!  Yum =)

I hope you enjoyed my quick recap.  I will have one up soon for the Ipsy Glam Bags as well.

Do you guys like these posts?  Or would you rather I just stick with the videos?

NOTD: Chevron Blues

Hey Beauties!

I promise I will get back into the swing of this…  But for now, here is another NOTD!

I call this one “Chevron Blues”.  It is Essie’s “Mint Candy Apple” (which I always thought would be a minty green?), and Essie’s “Bobbing for Baubles”.

mint_candy_apple.jpg

Essie: Mint Candy Apple

Here is the photo of “Mint Candy Apple” from the Essie website, it looks green!  This is the main colour that I used for my manicure.

It takes 3 coats to be opaque, and dries very quickly, so sometimes it can get streaky or goopy while applying to the nail.

Make sure it is completely dry between coats, or you might grab and drag the polish underneath!

bobbing_for_baubles

Essie: Bobbing for Bauble

“Bobbing for Baubles” is a beautiful stormy grey-blue colour.  It is one I never really looked twice at before, but after one use I’m in love!  It goes on so smoothly, and it nearly opaque in one coat.  It is dark on the nail, but it is still really obvious that it’s not black.  I really don’t have another colour like this.

And here is the result!

IMG_0691

Chevron Blues

Again, Mint Candy Apple is the main colour (it looks Robin’s Egg blue, right!?), and Bobbing for Baubles is the base colour on my accent nail.  I used striping tape to shape out a chevron and painted inside the lines with Mint Candy Apple.  This was my first attempt at anything like this, it’s fairly simple, but I made sure to make it a challenge ;).  I first tried to use a small nail art brush, but I found it was too stiff to use and just left a streaky mess.  So I let that dry and then went in with the regular brush and it turned out not too badly.  I removed the tape right after the second coat to get a nice crisp line.  I think this would work better with a better formula.

I am pretty happy with how this turned out, especially for my first try!  I love the colour combo =).  I thought about doing a second chevron at the tip of my nail and having sort of an angled french tip look, but decided against it.  Maybe next time?

What other colour combinations do you guys think this would look good in?  Are you loving the chevron trend too?

Be sure to tweet me pictures of your manicures! @wstcoastbeauty

NOTD: St. Patrick’s Day!

Top o’ the Mornin’ to ya Beauties!

I hope you are enjoying your St. Patrick’s Day weekend =).  I wanted to do a quick post tonight to show you the nails that I chose to do for St. Paddy’s!

First, here is my wheel of inspiration that I did a few days ago, just playing around with different colours and ideas to see what I liked:IMG_0666

Yay Nail wheels!

And here is what I decided to go with:

IMG_0681 IMG_0679

I have two coats of Essie’s “Mojito Madness” as a green base underneath one coat of Butter London’s “Swinger”.  I am really happy with how it turned out!  I think this is the perfect grassy Irish green for St. Patrick’s Day =).  I used Orly “Luxe” on my accent nail and a thin piece of striping tape in a green colour that closely matched the green of my other nails!

Mojito Madness is a little bit lighter green with a creme finish.  The texture is a little bit tough to work with, it tends to streak and go on a little bit patchy since it is thick.  It stays tacky for a long time too.

mojito_madness

Swinger is a lime green glitter, one that I really wasn’t sure that I would ever wear when I got it for Christmas, but it looks SO amazing!

swinger

Orly’s “LUXE” is a gold metallic foil finish, it is very opaque.  If it weren’t for my strange need to put at least 2 coats of polish (usually 3), this one really only needs one coat!  But, I put two…

Luxe

I hope you liked my version of a St. Paddy’s Day manicure!

Do you do holiday themed manicures?  If you did a St. Patrick’s Day nail look, I would love to see a picture!  Tweet them to me @wstcoastbeauty with the hashtag #wstcoastbeauty_stpaddys or tag them on Instagram with the same hashtag so that I can find them!

Recent NOTDs

Hey Beauties!

I’m sorry it’s been so long again!  For my first new post I am going to catch you up on some of my recent nail polish adventures!  This one’s going to be picture heavy!

First up:  “Foggy” by Pop Beauty.  I had my eye on this for over a year before I finally purchased it.  I saw it in a boutique store in Vancouver, but they were selling for $20 each!  Too steep for me =(.  My friend and I were there for about an hour and we tried on every single colour they had.  So much fun!  This was my stand out favourite.  It is a medium grey with a beautiful shimmer that makes it so beautiful and not your boring average grey.  I was so excited to see it was on HauteLook, and for only $3!!  I couldn’t resist and bought 5 colours =)

IMG_0468

Next up is another Pop Beauty polish!  This is “Denim Metal”, a glitter-packed metallic blue.  It reminds me of Essie’s “Aruba Blue”, but full of blue and silver micro-glitter.  The texture is a little strange to apply, but it turns into a beautiful finish.  I do think it looks way better with a top coat, the glitter kind of sucks in the shine a little bit without it. A nice vibrant colour that I think I will be wearing it a lot in the summer.

IMG_0478

This was a bit of an experiment of mixing colours.  My main colour is “Marrow” by Butter London and I honestly don’t know what the accent colour is.  It is an OPI mini that my mom got me for Christmas a couple of years ago.  Marrow is a really nice purple creme polish, that I find has a hint of grey to it.  It isn’t the greatest formula that I have encountered from Butter London and goes on a bit patchy, but three coats finish it up nicely.  This is going to be a staple on my nails for the fall!  The OPI colour is a really rich dark purple with blue and purple shimmer.

IMG_0479

This next colour is from the China Glaze fall Safari collection.  It is called “Exotic Encounters”.  This is a dusty turquoise creme polish and took 2 coats to be fully opaque.  Here i topped it with OCC “Flatline” topcoat for a matte finish.  I really like how it turned out!  It’s not quite like a blackboard on your nails, which I like =)  I managed to avoid the white spots with the topcoat this time too!  This is the only polish I picked up from the collection.  Do you guys have any other favourites that I should try to find?

IMG_0538

These were my Valentine’s Day nails ❤  I used my new Zoya polish (the first time I ever tried one!) in “Sarah”.  How can I not love it when my namesake polish is this gorgeous?!  It’s a fiery red with golden orange micro-glitter that really shows in the bottle more than the nail.  It is such a vibrant colour!  I can’t get over how beautiful this is =)  I think I’m a little biased ;).  I used Konad stamping polish and a Spa Secrets plate to stamp on the hearts to make it a little bit more festive.

IMG_0547

Ok, this is a colour that I should have had on my hands a LONG time ago, especially after everything I heard about it.  I finally did when I went to Sally’s and they had a promotion on where if you spent $3 you got an Orly polish in the old packaging for free!  I found this little guy hiding in the basket =)  “Rage” is a beautiful rose gold metallic polish with a foil finish.  It is really nice because it works on every skin tone.  It doesn’t make you look pasty and cold like silver can, and it doesn’t make you look sallow, like true gold can.  It’s a really nice metallic neutral.  Plus, who wasn’t obsessed with rose gold?  I used Sally Hansen “Strobe Light” as the glitter accents, I’m not sure that I liked how it looked though.  They looked like a very similar tone so I thought they would work nicely together (I hadn’t used either polish yet), but not so much.  The smaller pink glitter disappeared into the base polish and it kind of just left these random sparse large silver chunks, not pretty!  [On a side note, I am really sad Orly changed their packaging. I loved the old rubberized lids!  It was my favourite packaging of all polish =(  Now they look kind of cheap…]

IMG_0556

IMG_0558

Don’t they look like they would work well together?

IMG_0561

This was a fun experiment.  This is Zoya’s new Pixie Dust formula!  I picked up “Vespa” a pale sage green and got it the first day it shipped!  These are designed to be matte, textured polish with obvious glitter particles.  It is definitely all of those things!  It took 3-4 coats to be fully opaque, and the textured finish really took a while to get used to.  For the first day it was so weird, it felt like I had something stuck to my nails, and I got that “shivers down my spine” feeling whenever they brushed up against something.  Especially my wool jacket!  After a while I got used to it though.  It was a really unique look!  I think this is a similar idea to OPI Liquid Sand polishes.

IMG_0635

IMG_0650

I tried to mess up the focus to show the glitter!

IMG_0651

Ok, this is the last one for this post, I promise!!

This is sadly another unknown colour though.  I really wish they would put the names on the minis! =(.  It is a beautiful pink with a subtle shimmer from the Holland Collection [I think it is “Pedal Faster Suzi!”].  It’s a very nice cool toned pink, not normally a colour I would wear, but I really liked it =).  I bought this in a mini set that came with 4 (5?) of the polishes from the collection.  This is definitely a winter/spring colour that will look best on me when I have a pale complexion.  I used a Spa Secrets stamping plate and a Konad polish to do the houndstooth print on my accent nail.  It didn’t quite work perfectly, but I think it was pretty good for a first try at a full nail stamp!  Sadly my top coat smudged it.  I think I need to invest in the Konad top coat.

IMG_0657

Sorry this was so long!  I hope you enjoyed it though =)  My next polish post will be on my St. Patrick’s Day nails! =D

xoxo
