Glymm: Beauty Gone Wrong

Hi Beauties,

After coming back to my blog after a two week hiatus with my family visiting, I found a comment on an old post with some sad news.  The Canadian beauty box company Glymm, which I subscribed to and enjoyed before moving to the United States, abruptly shut down their business in April, leaving many subscribers having paid for up to 4 boxes that they never received.  Now, all business ventures are a risk, and as a consumer you are partially responsible for this, but it just sounds like Glymm was very irresponsible in the way they handled the transition.  Continually billing customers for services they couldn’t (and knew they wouldn’t) provide, as well as continuing to take orders from their online shop and never shipping the items.  I have even heard someone claim that they charged some clients for their May boxes, and then shut down and removed all public presence within 24 hours.  They sent subscribers a short email indicating that they were going out of business effective immediately, and that they would not receive a refund for anything they had been charged for.

You can read the whole story here.

I guess I consider myself lucky that I was forced to unsubscribe when I moved.  It sounds like the bag had been going downhill for a while before this happened.

I found out about all this because Nikki from commented on one of my posts and shared the news story with me.  I wish I had seen this earlier because she told me that they were putting together a FREE box ($25CAD value) that they would give to a certain number of Glymm subscribers who had been ripped off in the whole debacle.  Sadly they are all sold out, but I still wanted to post about this, to let you know about a company that was trying to step up and help a girl out!  While it’s not the end of the world, it still really sucks to feel like you’ve had something pulled out from underneath you like this.  So please, share the love and check out a website that tried to step in and brighten your day.

I hope none of you were affected by this!

Catching Up: May Glymm Bag!

Hey lovelies!  This is my last catching-up post!  Yay! =D  I may have other posts up about older things, but they will all be newly crafted posts just for this blog =).

Hey Beauties!

So here we go, I will finally be caught up with my Glymm posts!  This is the most recent bag that I have received =)  (June will be here any day, lol).

This month:  Glymm goes Green!

New Packaging

The cutest make-up bag!!  The new waste-less packaging means that all of the goodies now come in this adorable little bag =).   I think it is the perfect size to slip into your purse.  Not too small to hold anything, but not so big that it will take over your whole bag.  Plus look at the colour! =D

The inside is super easy to clean too, so no worries if something spills.

See what I mean about not being too small!  Look at what this baby holds =)

For  Her: “Edgy, sexy, impulsive.  Shock yourself and everyone around you with this fierce bouquet of passionflower.”

Top Notes: Passionflower, pink peony, poppy flower

Mid Notes: liquid chocolate accord, blackberry, narcisse, jasmine

Base Notes: vanillin, patchouli, ambers, skin musk

For Him: “turn down the lights, amplify the sound.  ace on impulse.  Get addicted to this juicy scent.  IT’s fersh and leaves a lasting impression.”

Top Notes: Clementine, Purple Lavender, cucumber

Mid Notes: Psmanthus, black pepper, cardamom, black basil

Base Notes: Chocolate, Tobacco, Ambreine, Cashmeran musk, Patchouli

First goodies: CK one Shock for him and for her.  Samples give about 35 sprays.  Full sizes are 50mL/$45.

I used the one for her on a recent girls night, and was pleasantly surprised!  I don’t know what kind of smell I was expecting, but I don’t like super strong florals…  This was really nice.  A bit of floral, but also sort of fruity and musky.

All of my friends liked it too =D

I haven’t smelled the one for him.  My fiance doesn’t wear cologne ever either, so I’m really not sure what I’m going to do with this.  Maybe I’ll just wear it if i like how it smells =)

Next sample is NuMe Hydro Punch conditioner.  Up to 4 uses (20mL).  Full size is 250mL/$24.99.

I haven’t used this sample yet, more of my delayed gratification tactics =P.  I’ve been waiting for a time where I would specifically want really nice shiny hair.

What the description says:  “Turn dull and damaged hair into vibrant, healthy strands that you can’t help but twirl all day long.  A punch never sounded so appealing.  This conditioner is packed with Argan oil, fatty acids, vitamin E and powerful antioxidants.”

Ok, this one I’m going to rave about!!  This is Coola Cucumber mineral face matte finish sunscreen with SPF 30.  I really didn’t notice any cucumber scent, which I liked.

“Infused with certified organic ingredients like vitamins, antioxidants, Shea butter and borage seed oil.”  So it’s great for your skin too!  Sample size is 5mL (about 4 uses).

It is a physical sunscreen, meaning the active ingredients are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.  These minerals sit on top of your skin and immediately form a protective layer that reflects the UVA and UVB (yes they are broad spectrum) rays away from your skin.  This is different from chemical, and more common, sunscreens that contain ingredients such as avobenzone and oxybenzone.  These chemicals need time to absorb into your skin, meaning you have to apply 20 minutes before sun exposure.  They then absorb the UVA/UVB rays and this changes their chemistry, causing them to lose effectiveness.  Also oxybenzone might actually be a carcinogen when exposed to UV radiation!  yikes…  These sunscreens need multiple active ingredients to fully protect you from all UVB and UVA I and UVA II rays.  (UVB burns and UVA causes cancer).

This sunscreen goes on so light!  It is transparent (an improvement from the typical white ‘zinc nose’ that you see on lifeguards so often =p).  They claim that it makes a perfect primer, so I figured I would try this out today.  It works!  It kept me from getting shiny all day, made my foundation go on smoothly, and smoothed out the appearance of my pores.  Talk about bang for your buck!  I have been wearing this for 10 hours, and my face still feels great.  I am in love with this!

Just as a nice little bonus:  Coola products are on Haute Look today!   go check it out =D  I bought myself a full size (50mL) for only $18, it retails for $36.  Coola also donates a portion of their sales to cancer research =)

Next up, Mereadesso Lip Treats.

This is kind of a full size sample, it is one full size lip treat, but they actually sell in packages of 2 for $28.  I got the deep burgundy colour which sheers out really nicely on the lips!!  The other options to get were a light pink or a clear balm.

“Delight your lips with moisture and a punch of desired colour with this new and innovative Lip Treat.  This exceptionally moisturizing and soothing lip balm not only tints your lips but can also be layered to give them more intense colour.  What’s more?  It doubles as a primer for gloss.  It will enhance shine and keep your gloss in place longer.”

It certainly feels amazing on the lips!  Very smooth and soft and moisturizing, and I love the colour.  I haven’t tried it with gloss over-top yet though,  I don’t really think it needs it.

Next is a pair of skincare products form Caudalie.  The Vinosource SOS Thirst Quenching Serum and Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet.  Samples are 1mL each (about 3 uses)  These were included and meant to be used together.  I haven’t used them yet as I got this box just after I started using Origins, and I am so in love with Origins it’s hard to want to try anything else!

Serum:”Give your skin a splurge of hydration and restore moisture balance for softer mor supple skin.  This high potency serum captures and continually diffuses water deep within the skin to impart intense hydration.”  Full size is 30mL/$48

Sorbet: “Save your skin with this moisturizer.  Your face will feel refreshed, hydrated and comfortably soft.  This gel-cream has immediate and long-lasting calming properties.  It awakens the skin’s hydration mechanisms and replenishes it’s water reserves.”  Full size is 40mL/$38.

I used these while on a trip to Vancouver to visit my sister.  They definitely felt nice, but they weren’t so over the top amazing that I felt that I HAD to have them.  At this price I probably won’t purchase the full size of either of these.

and Finally (see, this baby was packed full of awesome stuff!) also from Caudalie, their Crushed Cabernet Scrub.  Full size is 150g/$29.  Sample is 60g.

“This natural, wine-inspired body scrub reveals softer and healthier skin.  Along with its coarse granules it also contains the 6 draining and cellulite fighting organic essential oils of the Contouring Concentrate – so boost your slimming regimen!”

I haven’t used this yet, as my shower is crammed full of products already and I have many backups waiting…  I’ve told myself I need to get to work on using them up and not try anything new for a while.  This might be a handy little container to take traveling though!!

As you can see these boxes are amazing!  So many great goodies =)

Catching Up: My first Glymm Box!

Hey ladies, this one is from June 1, 2012, and any text in purple I have added new today

Hey Beauties!

So my fiance was just here and we got the final big wedding details all squared away!  That is the major reason my life has been so insane lately.  I have a lot to catch up on here, I have a lot of photos stored away to post for you guys!

I am going to start off with…  GLYMM!  Glymm Box is a monthly subscription service for Canadians who want to receive 4-5 deluxe samples of beauty products delivered to your doorstep.  It costs $12/month, shipping is free, and they have a shop on their website where you can order full sizes of the products that you like with free shipping.  Also, you earn reward points for filling out surveys about the products you receive every month (the take less than a minute) and you can redeem those points for $$ off a purchase in the store (100 points = $10)!

When you sign up you will fill out a survey to give Glymm an insight on your beauty tastes, and this will help determine the products you get!  Some months you may get one of two different products, or sometimes you may get one of 2-3 colours of a certain product based on your profile.

I have been subscribed for 4 months now, and I love it.  There is usually at least one full size item included in each box, which more than covers what you pay for it.  And they have just changed their packaging to the cutest makeup bags that are alone worth the cost of the box!

I’ll start you off with my first Glymm box, from February:

This is what the boxes used to look like when they arrived!  All pink and pretty =)

When you opened it up it was all wrapped in a ribbon and the month’s theme card, was on top, and on the back it listed all of the products in the box and the details about them.  February’s theme was “Camera Ready”.

The goodies!

First up, Mai Couture Blot & Bronze papers.  What the card says: “Blot & Bronze with our phenomenal 2-1 Blotting/Bronzing Paper.  Eliminate excess oil without disturbing your makeup.  The pigmented paper deposits a hint of golden colour to even out skin tone while the refined shimmer gives the skin a radiant glow.  The result is an oil-free sun-kissed complexion.”

I have yet to try these, as I really feel like they are a summer product, but I will let you know what I think when I do!  Full size is 100 sheets for $24.

Next up is the Glam Glow Mud Mask.  What the card says: “Lights, Camera, Action!  Designed for Hollywood’s entertainment industry, it tingles, tightens & lightens in 15 minutes, so you’re always camera-ready.  GLAMGLOW uses volcanic rock, french sea clay and real pieces of green tea leaf.  It will give you super sexy, super radiant skin”.  Full size is 50mL for $78, but the card included a promotion code to get it for only $50!  The coupons expire about a month after the box arrives, so to take advantage you really should be trying the products right away!

This product took some trial and error for me.  The first time I used it I hated it!  The formula was so dry that I really found it difficult to apply and I wound up losing about half of my product down the sink =(.  I had my “ah-ha!” moment while trying to take it off.  Adding just a little bit of water makes the clay infinitely more workable and it is really pleasant to use!  I used the water to sort of mush the clay around my face and applied a proper thin coat.  It dried up again and washed off easily leaving behind soft smooth skin.  The next time I use this I will put a little bit in my hand and add some water and make the paste BEFORE applying to my face.  I anticipate much greater success!

Next is a Sula Natural eye shadow in a soft purple hue (I think each box got a different colour depending on your profile).  What the card says: “Keep your eyes looking flirty fresh with this trendy, easy-to-use Sula Beauty shadow.  Enjoy a playfully pretty eye shadow in gorgeous colours.  They’re long lasting, easy to blend and made with natural ingredients.”

This is definitely a spring shade, so I haven’t tried it yet, but I will very soon!  This is a full-size sample, which is awesome.  It retails for $8.

Finally we have a Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm, also full size!  I have had one of these before in a different colour.  The one in my box is hibiscus, which I ALMOST bought when I got my other one, so glad I didn’t!  Anyways, I love these and will use this a lot =).  What the card says: “This tinted lip balm by Burt’s Bees gives your lips a hint of colour with a soft sweet flavour.  It was also voted Best New Lip Product by Consumers.  It’s made with natural ingredients that moustiruze and condition your lips.  This stuff really is the ‘balm’.”

This retails for $7.99.

As you can see just the two full size products more than pay for the cost of the box!

I was really excited to get my first box, and anxiously await my new ones every month =).

When you sign up you can choose a one-time box, a monthly subscription (which I have), a 3 month gift-subscription or a 1 year subscription (you get 1 month free!).  For each subscription you get a certain amount of Glymm points to redeem in the store.  Here is a list of some of the brands that you might get each month:

Check it out here if you are interested:

Hope this is helpful and some of you find a new little beauty indulgence!

I am no longer subscribed to this service as I have moved to the USA, but for my fellow Canucks out there it’s a great thing to look into!
